FOOD INSECURITY STRIKES MERCILESSLY

Till recently, only the political situation in Burundi was talked about. At present, the economic situation has come in and it is becoming unbearable for many families - a quarter of the population. Of course everything started gradually: prices for food doubled, some tripled. Some products from outside were nowhere to be found and slowly families have been forced to reduce their budget to a minimum to the point of having only a simple meal a day. The consequences are visible: students go to school but they are weak to go on for the whole day; adults who respond to the job do not have enough energy to do the job. This situation was the consequence of the instability of the climate; the climate has not been favorable while 90% of the Burundians live on agriculture. Farmers have seen their fields dry up, without any recourse. They had a whole cultural season canceled because of the sun that burned everything and there was no rain. What will happen to these poor farmers and the whole population since their annual income is less than $ 300 under normal conditions and their only income is agriculture? At the onset of the situation, it was thought to be a simple food shortage, but the situation quickly deteriorated and the country was reported to be experiencing an alarming situation with a hunger index of over 30. An aid plan has just been launched by humanitarian actors, but the question remains: Will there be enough assistance for all the needy? Surely the action of the humanitarian actors will be limited, because the need for essential goods is very great. The neediest are children, young people and those advanced in age.
